What Shopify's Grok connector can't do (and workarounds)
Every limit of the Shopify connector for Grok and Grok Bot, from refunds to live themes, with the workaround and Shopify's source for each.

Shopify's connector for Grok works in both Grok and Grok Bot and covers products, collections, inventory, orders, customers, discounts and analytics [Shopify: connector for Grok]. But Shopify says plainly that it "doesn't replace your Shopify admin" and that some changes "can be made only in your Shopify admin" [Shopify: connector for Grok]. Here's every limit we track: 14 things it can't do and 7 things it does with limits.
Blocked even with write access
Shopify lists these as blocked "even when you approve write access" [Shopify: connector for Grok]:
- Issue refunds
- Cancel or capture orders, or mark orders as paid
- Process returns
- Create or adjust gift cards
For all of these, the workaround is your Shopify admin.

How to avoid hitting limits
- Name Shopify in your request and confirm the connector is on, or Grok may reply with instructions instead of acting [Shopify: connector for Grok].
- Ask one thing at a time, especially analytics questions [Shopify: connector for Grok].
- Approve write access only for what you need. You can't lower access later without uninstalling and reinstalling [Shopify: authorizing AI access].
- In Grok Bot, results come back as text only, not tables or charts [Shopify: connector for Grok].
Quick answers
Can Grok Bot refund a Shopify order?
No. Shopify says a connected AI tool can't issue refunds, cancel or capture orders, mark orders as paid, process returns, or create and adjust gift cards, even with write access. Use your Shopify admin.
Can Grok Bot edit my live Shopify theme?
No. It can change an unpublished theme, but it can't edit, publish or delete your live theme. Duplicate the theme in Shopify admin, let the tool edit the copy, then publish it yourself.
Can Grok Bot edit orders or customer records?
No. The connector reads orders and customers but doesn't change them. Edit them in Shopify admin.
Can Grok Bot create fixed-amount discounts?
No. It creates percentage-off codes only and doesn't change existing codes.
Why did a bulk change stop halfway?
The connector changes items one at a time, so a large batch can stop partway; status changes are limited to 50 products per batch. Finish the rest in Shopify admin.
